Latin music has long influenced American popular music, jazz, rhythm and blues, and even country music. For an early example (1914), the bridge to "St. Louis Blues"-- "Saint Louie woman, with her diamond rings"--has a habanera beat, prompting Jelly Roll Morton to comment, "You've got to have that Spanish tinge". Many an American band has added a conga player, maracas, or other Latin percussion for just that reason. The Argentine tango was a worldwide success in the 1930s. Tango dancers and records could be found from Los Angeles to Beijing. In more recent times, artists such as Carmen Miranda, Desi Arnaz, Xavier Cugat, and Pérez Prado ("The Mambo King") were popular with audiences of all cultures. Judy Garland's first hit, as a member of the "Gumm Sisters", was "La Cucaracha", right down to the line about marijuana. It was common in dance halls in the 30s and 40s for a Latin orchestra, such as that of Vincent López, to alternate with a big band because dancers insisted on it. Latin music was extremely popular with dancers, not only the samba, paso doble, rumba, and mambo, but even the conga.
In this book, we shall concentrate on Bessel beams in the pulsed laser regime. Bessel beams, featured by a central peak (Bessel core) surrounded by rings, are a particularly interesting class of light beams, which can be generated by conical lenses (axicons) or holograms. Thanks to their "nondiffracting" properties they have been used in various research areas. The main objective of the book was the optimization of the pulsed Bessel beam for two distinguished applications, one for electron acceleration and the second one for the microstructuring of transparent materials. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part we have exploited in a numerical work the accelerating nature of suitably tailored Bessel beams, for the gain enhancement of particles in standard laser-driven plasma wakefield accelerators, where the energy gain is limited by phase dephasing of the particle with respect to the plasma wave. In the second part we have reported the microstructuring of different transparent materials, especially in the diamond with an ultrashort pulsed Bessel beam for different potential applications, such as microfluidics, biosensing is also investigated.
Women now drive some 80% of all buying decisions. By 2010, they'll account for half of America's private wealth: $13 trillion dollars. A few remarkable companies have learned how to refocus on women -- and, in so doing, have achieved truly stunning results. In The Power of the Purse, top journalist Fara Warner takes you behind the scenes at those companies, revealing how they did it -- and how you can, too. Unlike previous books on marketing to women, this one doesn't settle for generalities: it offers in-depth, start-to-finish case studies. Discover how McDonald's turned around its business by recognizing women as full-fledged consumers, not just 'Moms.' Learn how Kodak's digital camera business soared from fourth to first by recognizing women's importance as family 'memory makers'. See how P G built Swiffer into a cultural revolution, and how the diamond industry did the same for right-hand rings. Watch Bratz topple Barbie, Torrid create its enormously successful plus-size stores for teenagers, and Avon connect with a radically new generation of women. From Nike to Home Depot, each story is unique -- but in every case, these companies put women at the center of their strategies, and listened intently to what real women consumers were telling them. It's not about 'painting your products pink': it's about transforming the way you think about women. Do that, and you'll create products that sell better to everyone.

The things women will do - to men and to each other - in search of love. Veron Darcey is a 20-something African American woman who wants it all: a successful career, an upwardly mobile life, and a loving, attentive man. But the last few men Veron has been with have either added her to their five-woman rotation or relegated her to the dreaded "just friends" zone. After one particularly bad date, Veron caves in and asks her best friend, Demetria Sparks, to share her secrets. Demetria is a gorgeous woman who has something special - men line up to paint her toenails and lavish her with Caribbean cruises and diamond rings. Demetria tries to give Veron a mind-and-body makeover, but sweet Veron struggles with being aggressive. And when Demetria demonstrates her method on Veron's dream guy, Seaphes, his lack of interest provokes her to pull out all the stops - and forces Veron into a fierce competition between mentor and student. With pressure (and sexual tension) mounting, Veron begins to wonder if changing herself is a mistake. But is it too late to back off her new game now that she's gotten a juicy taste of just what she's capable of? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tina Marie Lovejoy.
